Olof Thunman (1879–1944), “Björk i blåst” (Birch in the Wind), ink on paper, signed, H. 40 cm; W. 54 cm.

Born in Uppsala in 1879, Olof Thunman was a versatile artist, both painter, illustrator, and poet. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts between 1902 and 1906, developing a personal style that weaves together Romantic and Symbolist influences. He trained alongside John Bauer, the renowned fairy-tale illustrator, and, like him, absorbed the national romanticism and mysticism that characterized Scandinavian art of the time.

Birch in the Wind perfectly illustrates Thunman’s sensitivity to Nordic landscapes. This work demonstrates a masterful command of line, where the delicate ink strokes accurately convey the supple foliage and the resilience of trees against the elements. Through a subtle interplay of shadow and light, the artist imparts a striking depth to the composition, capturing not only nature’s appearance but also its movement and essence.

Far from a mere topographical representation, this drawing expresses the ethereal atmosphere characteristic of Swedish landscapes—imbued with solitude and melancholy.
