Gilbert Méténier (1876–1950), Gourd, stoneware, circa 1917–1920, H. 17.5 cm; W. 11.5 cm approx.
This striking vase, shaped in an organic form reminiscent of a gourd, is a rare work by Gilbert Méténier, dating from around 1917–1920. Its rough, almost living surface seems to rise from the earth, while the iridescent glazes play with the light—coppery reflections, verdigris tones, bluish highlights—a true alchemy of color.
Every detail reveals Méténier’s technical mastery and his sensitivity to natural textures. A sculptural piece, closer to sculpture than to a traditional vase.
Gilbert Méténier (1876–1950) established his workshop in Gannat (Allier) in the 1910s. Trained in ceramics alongside the leading figures of the time, he developed a personal style marked by richly modeled forms and deep glazes. Produced in small series, his work is now sought after for its expressive power and quality.
