Olof Thunman (1879–1944), Farmstead in Skogbo, Östervåla parish, Uppland, 1937, ink and pastel on paper, signed lower right “Olof Thunman,” titled Skogbo, dimensions: 26 × 45 cm.
A singular Swedish artist, Olof Thunman was simultaneously a writer, teacher, and painter. Rooted in the traditions of Uppland, he skillfully and sensitively expressed Swedish rural life, paying particular attention to vernacular architecture and the atmosphere of the seasons.
In Farmstead in Skogbo, created in 1937, Thunman delicately captures a farmstead in the village of Östervåla. The wooden structure of the buildings, the decorated porch, and the fresh snow tracing uncertain paths—all contribute to conveying the luminous sobriety of the Nordic winter. The cross-hatching ink technique combined with the soft pastel hues gives the work a character that is both graphic and intimate. Every detail seems imbued with attentive calm and memory.
