Ernst Norlind (1877–1952), Sturgeon, ink on paper, H. 21 cm; W. 59 cm (overall dimensions : 32 × 70 cm), signed lower right.

A Swedish artist of many talents — painter, writer, and engraver — Ernst Norlind was a singular figure on the Scandinavian art scene at the beginning of the 20th century. Trained at the Copenhagen Academy and later in Paris, he developed a style that is both precise and poetic, rooted in the observation of nature and imbued with a Symbolist sensibility.

In this drawing, Norlind unfolds an elegant and fluid composition in which the silhouettes of the fish stand out against the light background of the paper. The economy of means — the play of line, subtle shadows, and reserved whites — lends the piece a striking sobriety.

This study, poised between naturalism and stylization, reveals Norlind’s keen attention to the essential beauty of the animal world. Beneath the apparent simplicity of the drawing lies a meditation on rhythm, life, and the continuity of nature.
